The Big Picture

Anthrax outbreaks kill herbivores like the zebra pictured above, in Etosha National Park, Namibia. Steve Bellan, who received his Ph.D. in environmental science, policy, and management last year and is now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, uses a combination of mathematical modeling and field work to gain insight into the epidemiological dynamics of infectious diseases in wildlife (such as anthrax), as well as of human diseases.
